Teaching

Mentorship grounded in listening, clarity and long-term artistic development.

Teaching has been an integral part of Tatjana Masurenko’s artistic life from an early stage of her career. For more than three deacdes, she has taught viola as a solo instrument and chamber music, always in direct connection with her own work as a performing soloist. Her pedagogical approach has never developed separately from her artistic path, but has grown directly out of it.

She teaches from the perspective of an active performer. Long-standing stage experience and encounters with many different artistic personalities shape her work in the studio, where teaching is understood not as the transmission of a fixed method, but as a living artistic process.

Central to her teaching is the idea of artistic dialogue. Lessons are conceived as an exchange between two musicians, in which sound, imagination, energy, and responsibility move in both directions. Students are encouraged to think independently, to make conscious artistic decisions, and to develop a personal relationship to the music rather than simply following instructions.

At the core of her teaching lies a strong conviction: each musical work demands its own technical language. For Tatjana Masurenko, technique does not exist as an abstract, universal system that can simply be applied to all repertoire. Instead, every piece brings with it a specific character, structure, color, and expressive intention – and therefore demands its own technical solution.

Pedagogical Initiatives and Artistic Platforms

Over several decades, Tatjana Masurenko has initiated and led internationally recognized pedagogical projects alongside her institutional teaching. She is the founder of the Iznik International Viola Camp and the Leipzig International Viola Masterclasses, both of which became important meeting points for young violists from around the world.

These initiatives reflect her long-term commitment to nurturing young talent, fostering artistic exchange across cultures, and creating spaces in which intensive artistic and technical work can unfold beyond the framework of regular academic study.

Closely connected to her pedagogical work, Tatjana Masurenko has also initiated artistic platforms that grew organically out of long-term collaboration and mentorship. This includes the Los Angeles Viola Ensemble (previously the Leipziger Viola Ensemble), as well as the Concert Series ViolaPlus.

While these projects extend far beyond a purely pedagogical framework and function as independent artistic ventures, they reflect her commitment to sustained interdisciplinary artistic exchange, mentorship across generations, and collaborative work between students, colleagues, and invited guest artists.
